The Problem With Being A Brony by Nimaru The Problem With Being A Brony by Nimaru
This is the first version:

Many people talked about the text being too small and I thought it was pretty crowded and scattered (though I still think it was a good first attempt). So to make a better poster, I condensed the crap out of it, both in text and in images to make essentially the same points but with less space, more pictures, and fewer words. I also uploaded a MUCH larger version so you guys can print your own though I DO have it available as prints over at Redbubble:

Buy it here if you like it :)
POSTER @ REDBUBBLE: [link]

Anyway, I think it turned out really well so what do you think?

EDIT: Cheeseheads are Green Bay Packers fans (football) and the Blue Army are fans of Aerosmith

EDIT2: A lot of people today have commented that they can't believe that anyone would consider KH girly, but it's been more than a decade since it came out so many people forgot or were too young to remember. It's a "Disney Princess" game that uses the word "heart" a lot and has touchy feely "I LOVE YOU MAN" bromance between the main characters. Obviously it's awesome, but I've seen guys who couldn't get past that and wouldn't play the game.

Those who use pony porn aren't Bronies, anyway.

I think you can be a fan and into sexualization... it's just that I personally don't want to see my beloved characters in that way. So much of what I love about the pony world is the innocence and kindness of it all so for me they don't mix. But that doesn't mean that someone who feels differently shouldn't count as a fan at all.

Maybe, but if so I think it's only because there's more pony stuff PERIOD.

We both know that is not main reason. I also find it hard to accept but the brony fandom is slowly turning to furry fandom.

Well... I'm not going to argue other than to say I DON'T know because I don't have any visibility into the R34 scene for ponies. I'm doubtful, but I won't deny you.

(Not directed at you) Oh so you fandom haters have a problem with us liking stuff and cosplaying and all that but you are just like, esentially, 'Who cares! It's not me!' when it comes to all these problems in the world.

Terrorism, 9/11, KKK, Nazism, the rape, the killing, war, cyber bullying, bullying, the hurt. A lot worst than seeing someone watch this show. Well said! The poster.

Long like the Bronies and Pegasisters and fans.

This is actually quite good, but the one part I object to is putting Rush Limbaugh fans ("dittoheads") in there as an example of a loyal following with a name for its followers. I don't really think it's helpful to compare a group to Rush Limbaugh listeners when you're trying to encourage support for them.

Other than that, this is great.

I'm not sure if I understand what you mean. As I understand, Dittoheads is the name that Rush fans use for themselves... was that wrong?

No, it's right. It's just, Rush Limbaugh is an ass. I don't think he should be on there as an example when we're trying to portray bronies in a positive light. I mean, it's a minor nitpick, but anti-bronies (ugh, hate saying that, but what do you call them?) are going to see this and pick it apart. They'll see things like that and run with it.

Perhaps. Though it may illustrate my point even better in that you can dislike the subject, but you don't actually know enough to assume that every fan is just as bad. I'm pretty sure that I know some people who are Dittoheads, but still pretty decent people.

I think you underestimate the... creativity of brony critics trying to rationalize their kneejerk hatred of bronies. They'll see that and conclude that we're all neoconservatives. You see what I'm getting at here, though? There's no logic in that train of thought, but there is no logic in irrationally hating an entire fandom because of a kneejerk reaction to it either.

But like I said, it's a minor nitpick, and this is still my go-to resource for rebutting anti-brony crap online. Don't take it too personally. Just if you make a future version ever, you might consider leaving out the Dittoheads part. That'd be my advice anyway.

Stay awesome.

Generally my goal here was to have something you could give to someone who's leaning in a bad direction, but is still reasonable. You're right that there are some trolls/haters who can't be swayed, but at the least, if you show them this you can tell which group they belong to by their reaction.

Still don't like My Little Pony, still think it's weird to be a Bronie (or is it spelled brony?) but this is a pretty well organized argument. And I've liked some weird things too (had a Power Rangers binge lately) so I can respect where this is coming from.
You bronies do your thing, just don't try to make me join.

Why is it strange for grown men to like anything that's good? I like any animation as long as it's fun and interesting. The more interesting question is: how did they make a show that was so good that even grown men enjoy it?

That's a good answer. I'm just trying to figure out how a show that gears toward a young female demographic can be enjoyed by the older male demographic as well. That by itself is the root question I'm trying to figure out.

... Seriously?
I've been watching you for a long, long time Nimaru. Since I first joined the fandom, to be honest. I love your work and everything like that... And just this past spring, I did a research paper on Bronies for my English class... And I used that very article as a source.
It wasn't until today, when I decided to check in on some of your work that I missed while doing other things, that I find out that you were the author of that article, and a major asset in my graduation. Thank you, Nimaru, and I'll definitely be paying much more attention to your work here, as well as on The Geek Professor!

EDIT: /)_- how did I not notice the link to your DA page at the bottom, in the "Related Information" box?
EDIT 2: The school blocks DeviantArt. I wouldn't have had access to that link (ugh, I need to go to bed before I screw something else up... /)_- )...

Thank you. I did read it and I think that you are right. I can still say I'm not a brony (and I'm still not interested in watching the show) it definitely answered my questions as to why this attracted a seemingly out of place demographic. And I have to admit, some of the fan pics and comics on MLP are pretty hilarious.
Once again, thanks for explaining.

Chances are that this would be very helpful for a real hater/troll, but it's a good way to tell if someone can be reasonable about it or not. Send them the link and if they're still being asses about it, time to give up.

Well you shouldn't give up on little things like that. Just ignore them. And they would have to be pretty big jerks to still hate on or troll bronies and other fandoms because of their personal problems...

I appreciate this poster not because I am a Brony myself, but because people need to see it viewed in a different light.

Lots of people think it is weird or different, but it is harmless fandom and there is nothing wrong with that!

Not a Bronie myself, even if I watched the show, but you make many points here. It's a great chart that should get more view, just for the sake of tolerance to many fandoms and also the right for guys to enjoy shows that are seen as "girly". 21st century powaaa!

Indeed. A lot of people forget, but Anime fans used to get all kinds of crap for watching anime. Especially if they watched "girl's" anime as well.

True, I wonder how many times that vicious circle will go round and round.
BTW I'm re-watching MLP right now (thank to your great article on your website), I gave it a try a year ago but there were not many episodes back then to get me hooked. Also in the same time there was a serie I loved so I was much occupied by it.
