The Problem With Being A Brony by Nimaru

STOP! Click on the thumbnail here to see the greatly updated and improved version of this poster. I'm leaving the old one up for posterity, but the new one really is better.

NOTE: Click on the picture to zoom in. If you still can't see the text, try clicking the pic again to see if it will zoom in more. Alternatively, you can download it on the right if you still can't see the text.

It took me several weeks to make this and I'm proud of the effort. I've made several web articles explaining the fandom and fighting the stereotypes and ignorance, but haters just won't take the time. So I figured; why not a highly colorful infographic?

I avoided using ponies more than absolutely necessary because the point was to show people how other hobbies and fan groups act just like we do. Every complaint they have, is something we can find in their group too. And this infographic can be your everpresent reminder to them of that!

Good point, still don't like the show, but I don't hate, HATE is a very strong word. I still don't like it but I don't hate it but you make a very good point:colont:

Some shows simply don't click with some people.  I have never been a fan of Spongebob due to its low-brow, crass humor, utter lack of continuity, and unappealing character designs.  But those are some of the reasons other people love the show (why I don't even try to understand).  I have friends who are superfans of Spongebob, so I'm not about to judge their fandom.  Especially since fans of Spongebob tend to be somewhat eclectic, and thus we share interests in a variety of other things as well.  Including, in some cases, MLP.

Most important is not that you ever come to like the show, but that you never start to hate those of us who do. That's the mistake far too many people make :P

Dude, that first Lauren Faust quote is great and describes it pretty darn well. I watch it because it's a cartoon, not because it's about ponies. =P I've never been especially fond of equines. :P Not that I dislike them especially either. =P I find it funny that I'm actually into My Little Pony, it's hard to believe. XD It helps that I've never taken myself too seriously. :D

Being a trekkie for years (my entire life) before getting into MLP:FiM kind of prepared me a little, I think. It at least prepared me for the fat-guy-with-no-life stereotype. I even got laughed at once by a girl I liked for liking Star Trek. :P

Anyway, good job. :) It was fun to read and didn't come across as overly-defensive.

I love this, you made this great. Well done! You really make good points, what's important is a job and a hobby. A big part of your life! Stay inspire everyone, enjoy your favorite stuff you like and don't let the haters put you down. Like what you like, what makes you happy. Do it.

You make a good point with the rule 34, it's everywhere. Not only ponies, but other stuff too. 0_0

Yup it's ordinary for an hobby to collection stuff.

People could watch anything they like, it doesn't matter about age, gender.

And remember haters, if you don't like it, then don't search it up or talk about it, move on and look for something you like. Stop wasting your time.

Cyber bullying is for cowards, it's everywhere on the internet!

Never judge a book by its cover! Or a title, show, music, etc... and etc...!

As a non brony might I ask about how this show has gotten a huge and well known adult fandom?

So you know I do not think that is bad, I am just curious is all. I am not what one would call a brony basher.

Very well thought out.

I remember many months ago I watched the first few episodes one time. I picked apart each one for its faults, but now that I look back on it I was more doing a rifftrax (Making jokes during the show, which I do with almost everything I watch) than actually watching it. Maybe I should watch it again for real this time....

Well, I would agree with many that the first two episodes aren't the best of the series, but they're the ones that really captured me because of the story and characters (even if the story was a little weak at that time).

I would say that if you like a good story-anime, you would probably like MLP if you give it a chance. And if you don't, no worries. Different tastes are ok :)

This is weird. I have watched the first episode again with Luna and I feel as if I am nearly being assimilated. It is.... Odd.

I have to say, I am not sure I can be called a brony, but, after watching just three episodes from a new point of view, I can say I can understand why people like it.

Odd thing, it actually has a surprisingly good sense of humor.

And I can see your point by that link. Without a doubt, the art is quite nice.

The term is one you choose for yourself whether you identify as one. Technically anyone who's a non-traditional fan could be described as a "brony", but its up to no one but you if you want to identify that way. For example, I identify myself as an American otaku, a trekkie, a geek, a brony, etc. All fit me and I'm comfortable with all of them :)

One of the things I like best about the show is how things actually make SENSE. In episode three, I said "wait, where are your 50 releatives from ep 1!?" and then Twilight asked the same question! So gratifying.

It doesn't matter who the intended audience is. It's a bright, colorful show about anthro ponies. The amount of popularity it's gotten is solely ironical, and anyone who enjoys it legitimately is, to say it lightly, a freak.

Like you (very wisely and professionally) stated above, you can't win them all. And sadly, not even with logic.

And a freak? Like my dad says, "The most insulting thing you can call me is normal."

Wholigans are fans of the band. I'm surprised Whovians and Avatards didn't make it onto this poster. I'm a Whovian, and it's through Doctor Whooves that I actually discovered this fandom.

And believe me when I say that the ONLY difference between Whovians and Bronies is that the Doctor Who fandom has had 50 years to grow, whereas the MLP fandom sprang up practically overnight. And even then, Whovians have grown exponentially over the last eight years since the show came back.
